Yang Kai Hui
Mao's second wife, Yang Kai Hui, was herself a revolutionary hero.
The daughter of Mao's teacher in Changsha, they were married in 1920 the same year as he established a communist cell there and began his rise in Hunanese politics. Kang was one of the earliest members of the Chinese Socialism Youth League in Hunan and joined the CCP in 1920.
She and Mao had 2 children together and in Shanghai, Shaoshan and Hunan she assisted him and educated her sons whilst organising movements amongst peasants, workers and women. After 1927 she continued her underground activities against the Nationalists in Hunan and was captured and executed in 1930. She refused to publically denounce Mao or the CCP and died a martyr.
After the Cultural Revolution posters featured the purity and dedication of Yang Kai Hui as a rebuke to Mao's last wife, Jiang Qing and her disloyalty.
